Over
150 years ago John Jaques the second and his two friends,
Nathaniel Cooke of the Illustrated London News, and Howard
Staunton, the unbeaten Chess Champion of the time, developed
and introduced the Jaques Staunton Chessmen. They achieved
instant success and have now become the only universally
accepted chess design throughout the world. Jaques still
make exquisite hand crafted and turned replica sets based
on some of the original Ebony and Boxwood Staunton sets
made back in the 1800s, one of which we are able to offer
here as special Limited Edition Set. These are our favourite
sets, not only because they are of a very high quality,
but also because they carry enjoy a level of collecable
authenticity that is, we feel, unique to Jaques. The limited
edition re-introduction set is a replica of the 4" set made
by Jaques in the 1800s. The Fischer/Spassky Set, commissioned
in 1972 for the classic match between Bobby Fischer and
Spassky is also a fascinating and very beautiful collector's
